Don´t Sleep ist die neueste Band vom HC-Punk-Tausendsassa Dave Smalley (DYS, DAG NASTY, ALL und DOWN BY LAW). Quasi mit Pandemiebeginn wurde das erste Album veröffentlicht, und konnte entsprechend nicht betourt werden. Die Jungs haben aber nicht aufgegeben, und mit „See Change“ einen Nachfolger vorgelegt. Wie es um die Band-Chemie und das Leben in Corona-Zeiten bestellt war, konnten wir mit der Band per Mail-Interview klären. Dass Smalley kein Alleinherrscher ist, macht er nicht nur im Interview klar, auch Kollege Garret Rothmann kommt ausführlich zu Wort.

Hey Dave, Deine aktuelle Band Don‘t Sleep veröffentlicht gerade ein neues Album. Kannst Du uns erklären, wie Du Deine Band während der verdammten Corona-Zeit zusammengehalten hast, zumal Ihr ja erst kurz vor dem Ausbruch so richtig durchgestartet seid?

DAVE: Gute Frage. Erstens, und das ist bei weitem das Wichtigste: Covid hat so viele Leute getötet, darunter auch Freunde von mir, wie Rob Vitale von Black Train Jack und Nine Lives. Einer der besten Sänger, die ich je gehört habe, und ein supernetter Kerl. Es gab so viele Menschen mit Vorerkrankungen, die von dieser Krankheit betroffen waren. Eine tragische Zeit für die Menschheit.

Weit weniger wichtig, aber für alle Menschen von großer Bedeutung, waren die Auswirkungen auf die Kunst. Plötzlich wurden Tourneen abgesagt und Labels und Clubs geschlossen. Mit Don’t Sleep hatten wir gerade „Turn The Tide“ veröffentlicht, eine der großartigsten Platten, die jeder von uns je gemacht hatte. Voller melodischem Hardcore-Feuer und Wut, einem unglaublichem Songwriting der Jungs und mit „The Wreckage“ einem düsteren Reggae-Punk-Song, der zu den einprägsamsten Songs gehört, die ich je geschrieben habe. Neben den Produzenten Carson und Grant haben uns der legendäre Walter Schreifels (Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits, YOT) und der unglaublich talentierte Brian McTernan (Battery, Be Well) bei der Produktion und beim Schreiben unterstützt. Wow! Ich denke also, dass das Album „Turn the Tide“ ein großer Teil dessen war, was uns zusammenhielt – weil wir gerade dieses Feuer entfacht hatten, und wir einfach dranbleiben und es am Brennen halten mussten. Das und eine tiefe Freundschaft zwischen uns, die schon am Anfang der Bandgeschichte bestand. All das brauchten wir, um durchzuhalten. Besonders als unser Label Mission Two Entertainment wegen der verheerenden Auswirkungen von Covid auf die Plattenindustrie geschlossen wurde. Glücklicherweise hatten wir während der Sessions für das erste Album zwei Alben aufgenommen, so dass wir uns alle sehr auf das zweite Album freuten – danke, End Hits!

Wie würdest Du Don’t Sleep im Vergleich zu Deinen alten/anderen Bands wie DYS, DAG NASTY, ALL und DOWN BY LAW beschreiben?

DAVE: Ich denke, Fans dieser Bands werden Don’t Sleep lieben. DS enthält bis zu einem gewissen Grad Elemente all dieser Bands. Das neue Album „See Change“ ist größtenteils melodischer Hardcore, mit Ausnahme eines Tom Petty-Coversongs, dem wir, wie ich finde, eine wirklich harte Note verpasst haben, wie auch bei „Love Is The Suture“. Das erste Album „Turn The Tide“ hatte dagegen etwas abwechslungsreichere und melodischere Songs – interessanterweise haben wir alle diese Songs für beide Alben in den gleichen Sessions aufgenommen. Die Idee war, zuerst ein etwas melodischeres HC-Album herauszubringen, und dann, als zweite Veröffentlichung, ein wirklich hartes Hardcore-Album. Ich denke also, dass Fans von Dag Nasty, ALL, Dave Smalley and the Bandoleros und Down By Law beide Alben mögen werden; Fans von DYS werden vielleicht „See Change“ etwas mehr mögen.

Ist Don’t Sleep eine Band, in der alle Mitglieder gleichberechtigt sind, oder bist Du der „Boss“?

DAVE: Oh, verdammt, nein. Diese Jungs hören überhaupt nicht auf mich. Wenn überhaupt, dann bin ich deren Leibeigener, der das Feld bestellt, und die anderen sind die grausamen feudalen Herren. Kleiner Witz. Wir sind eine Gruppe von Freunden, die zusammen Musik machen. Keiner ist der Boss, alle sind Freunde, die die Liebe zum Hardcore und zueinander eint. Jeder hat eine Stimme.

Auf der CD-Version des neuen Albums gibt es acht Bonustracks. Warum sind sie „nur Bonus“?

GARRETT: Gute Frage! Die ersten beiden Don’t Sleep-Veröffentlichungen waren eine 12-Zoll-EP bei Unity Worldwide und eine 7-Zoll-EP bei Reaper Records. Beide Veröffentlichungen sind mittlerweile vergriffen, daher waren wir begeistert, als Oise vorschlug, dass End Hits eine CD-Version von „See Change“ herausbringt und die Songs der ersten beiden Alben als Bonustracks hinzufügt. Wir freuen uns, dass alle unsere Songs nun in physischer Form erhältlich sind. Gute Idee, Oise!

Wie seid Ihr auf die Idee gekommen, Tom Pettys „Running Down A Dream“ zu covern?

GARRETT: Wir sind alle große Fans von Tom Petty und lieben diesen Song. Er war so ein ikonischer Musiker und hatte einfach seinen eigenen Stil – weder trendy, noch leicht einzuordnen. Irgendwie ein Punk! Angesichts seines Todes vor einigen Jahren dachten wir, es wäre eine coole Art, Tom Petty zu ehren, indem wir ein Cover von „Running Down a Dream“ machen. Ich persönlich mag es nicht, wenn Bands Songs covern, die einfach nur wie eine Kopie des Originals klingen. Deshalb gefällt mir die Tatsache, dass dieses Cover definitiv härter ist als das Original. Ich finde, es ist toll geworden!

Deine alte Band DYS hat sich 2010 wiedervereinigt und auf Wikipedia ist zu lesen, dass es neue Songs geben wird. Eine Tour war für 2020 geplant (und wurde wegen Covid abgesagt). Kannst Du uns etwas über den aktuellen Status von DYS erzählen und wie es ist, in zwei Bands gleichzeitig zu spielen?

DAVE: Manchmal ist es anstrengend, oft verwirrend, aber immer lustig. Es geht nicht nur um DYS und Don’t Sleep – es geht auch darum, Tourneen, Aufnahmepläne und Albumveröffentlichungen für Don’t Sleep, DYS, Down By Law und Dave Smalley and the Bandoleros zu organisieren. Und die Sache ist die: Ich bin Schriftsteller, Texter, Sänger – alles Dinge, die Organisations- und Zeitpläne passen. Es ist also schwierig für mich sein, aber wahrscheinlich noch schwieriger für meine Bandkollegen, die mir freundlicherweise helfen, nicht die Übersicht zu bleiben.

Wie sehen die Tourpläne für Don’t Sleep aus? Können wir mit einigen Shows in Europa/Deutschland rechnen?

GARRET: Wir können es kaum erwarten, in Europa auf Tour zu gehen, und haben einige Tourpläne in Arbeit, die wir hoffentlich bald bekannt geben können. Wir wissen, dass die Europäer eine Leidenschaft für Hardcore haben, und wir freuen uns darauf, „See Change“ mit unseren europäischen Brüdern und Schwestern zu teilen. Vielleicht werden wir auch ein paar Songs von Daves anderen Bands spielen!

Hey Dave, your latest Band Don´t Sleep is coming up with a new record. Could you describe, how you kept your band together, during the fuc*** covid-times, especiallysince you started the band just a few month before the pandemic?

DAVE: Great question. So first, and most important by far, Covid killed so many people, including friends of mine, including Rob Vitale from Black Train Jack and Nine Lives. One of the best singers I ever heard, and a super sweet guy. So many people with preexisting conditions were taken by that disease. A tragic period for all humanity.

Far less important, but still impacting the human family, was how it impacted the arts. Suddenly tours were shut down, and labels and clubs closed. For Don’t Sleep, we had just released “Turn the Tide,” which is one of the greatest records any of us had ever made. Full of melodic hardcore fire and fury, incredible songwriting by the guys, and “The Wreckage,” a dark reggae punk song that is one of the most distinctive songs I ever wrote. In addition to producers Carson and Grant, we had production and songwriting inputs from the legendary Walter Schreifels (Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits, YOT) and the incredibly talented Brian McTernan (Battery, Be Well). Wow! So I think that album, “Turn the Tide,” was a big part of what held us together – that we had just made this fire, and we just needed to hang on and keep it lit. That, and a deep friendship between us that has been there since early on in the band’s story. We needed all of that to hang tough, esp when our label, Mission Two Entertainment, shut down due to Covid’s devastating impact on the record industry. And luckily, we had recorded two albums in our sessions for the first record, so we were all really looking forward to the second album – thanks, End Hits!!

How would you describe Don´t Sleep in comparison to your old/other bands like DYS, DAG NASTY, ALL und DOWN BY LAW?

DAVE: I think fans of those bands will love Don’t Sleep. Don’t Sleep has elements of all of those bands, to a degree. The new Don’t Sleep album that has just come out, “See Change,” is mostly all melodic hardcore, with the exception of a Tom Petty cover song that I think we kind of gave a really hard edge to as well, and also “Love Is The Suture.” The first album, “Turn the Tide,” had a bit more diverse and more melodic songs – interestingly, we recorded all of those songs for both albums in the same sessions. The idea was to release a slightly more melodic hc album first and then a really hard-edge hardcore album for the second release. So between the two albums, I think fans of Dag Nasty, ALL, Dave Smalley and the Bandoleros, and Down By Law will love both albums; fans of DYS would love “See Change” (the new album) a bit more perhaps.

Is Don´t Sleep a band with all members in full membership and equal rights, or are you considered as „the boss“?

DAVE: Oh hell no. Those guys don’t listen to me about anything. If anything, I’m the feudal serf working the field, and they are the cruel feudal overlords. I kid, I kid. We are a band of friends making music together. No one is the boss, just friends bonding through a love of hardcore and of each other. Everyone has one vote.

On the CD-version of your new record there are eight bonus tracks. Why are they„bonus only“?

GARRETT: Great question! The first two Don’t Sleep releases were a 12” EP onUnity Worldwide and a 7” on Reaper Records. Both releases are now out-of-print,so we were excited when Oise suggested End Hits could release a CD version of “See Change” but also add the songs from the first two records as bonus tracks.We’re happy that all of our songs are available on physical format. Good idea Oise!

How did you come to the decision to do a cover of Tom Pettys „Running Down A Dream“?

GARRETT: We’re all big fans of Tom Petty and love that song. He was such an iconic musician and just had his own lane – not trendy or easy to categorize. Kind of a punk! With his recent passing we thought it would be a cool little way that we could pay tribute to Tom Petty by doing a cover of Running Down a Dream. Personally, I don’t enjoy when bands cover songs and they just sound like a facsimile of the original, so I like the fact that this cover is definitely heavier than the original. I think it turned out great!

Your old band DYS was reunited in 2010, and on wikipedia it is said, that there are going to be new songs. A tour was planned in 2020 (and cancelled because of covid). Could you tell about the recent status of DYS and how it is to run in 2 bands at the same time?

DAVE: It is exhausting sometimes, and confusing a lot of the time, and fun all of the time. So, it’s not just DYS and Don’t Sleep – it’s arranging tours and recording schedules and album releases for Don’t Sleep, DYS, Down By Law, and Dave Smalley and the Bandoleros. And the thing is, I’m a writer, a lyricist, a singer – all things that do not mix with organization and schedules. So it can be tough for me, but probably tougher for all my bandmates, who kindly help me stay organized.

What are the touring plans with Don´t Sleep? Can we expect some shows in Europe/Germany?

GARRETT: We are super anxious to tour in Europe and have some touring plans in the works that we are hoping to be able to announce soon. We know that Europeans are passionate about hardcore, and we are excited to share “See Change” with our European brothers and sisters. Maybe we might even play a few songs from Dave’s other bands . . .
